Heat vs. Blade: Graphite Tip Prep
A tubing cutter that squares a steel shaft cleanly can shred a graphite tip apart — the material dictates the tool, not the other way around.
Steel shafts cut cleanly with a rotary tubing cutter because the material deforms predictably under a scoring wheel. Graphite is a woven composite, and applying the same rotary pressure can crush and splinter the fiber layers at the cut line rather than slicing through them cleanly — damage that's often invisible until the epoxy bond fails weeks or months later.
Why Blade Choice Matters
We cut graphite with a fine-toothed, high-speed abrasive wheel designed for composite material, run at a controlled feed rate rather than forced through quickly. Cutting too fast generates localized heat that can degrade the resin holding the fiber layers together, while cutting too slowly with the wrong blade tooth count tends to fray rather than shear the fibers at the edge.
The Chamfer Step Nobody Skips Here
After the cut, we chamfer the outer edge of the tip — a light bevel that removes any raised fiber strands and gives the epoxy a cleaner surface to bond against. Skipping this step leaves sharp, slightly proud fibers that can create a stress point right at the bond line, a common but avoidable cause of early tip failure on graphite builds.
An epoxy bond is only as good as the surface it's bonding to. A rushed graphite cut can look fine and still leave a compromised bonding surface underneath.
Dust Matters Too
Graphite cutting produces fine composite dust that we control with a dedicated extraction setup at the bench — both for air quality in the shop and because leftover dust on the tip surface can interfere with epoxy adhesion if it isn't fully cleaned before assembly.
The Takeaway
Steel and graphite are not interchangeable at the cutting stage, even though the trim chart numbers might look similar on paper. The right blade, feed rate, and finishing chamfer are what keep a graphite tip trim from becoming a hidden weak point in the finished club.
