The Half-Inch Call: Tip or Butt?
Half an inch is half an inch, until you decide which end of the shaft it comes off — then it stops being the same cut at all.
Golfers who've never watched a shaft get trimmed usually assume length is length — that cutting a shaft down by half an inch produces the same result no matter where the material comes off. It doesn't. A butt trim shortens overall length and adds a small amount of stiffness across the whole shaft. A tip trim shortens length too, but concentrates the added stiffness right where the head attaches, and shifts the effective kick point higher in the process.
Why the Butt End Feels Different
Trimming the butt end removes material from the softest, whippiest section of most shaft designs, but it's also the section furthest from where energy transfers into the ball at impact. The stiffness change is real but distributed, which is why a butt-only trim tends to feel like a modest overall firming rather than a dramatic shift in launch or feel.
Why the Tip End Changes More
The tip section does most of its work in the final microseconds before impact, so stiffening it has an outsized effect on how the club releases through the ball. A half-inch tip trim on the same shaft model as a half-inch butt trim will typically read noticeably higher on the frequency board and produce a firmer, more controlled feel through impact specifically, rather than a uniform change across the whole shaft.
Ask which end came off before comparing two "identically trimmed" shafts — a half-inch tip cut and a half-inch butt cut are not interchangeable, even on the same shaft model.
How We Decide
If a client's overall length is correct but the shaft feels too soft through impact, we look at a tip trim first, since it addresses the feel issue directly without shortening the club further than needed. If length itself needs adjusting and feel is already close to right, a butt trim usually preserves more of the shaft's original character while getting the length where it needs to be.

Both cuts remove the same amount of material, but they solve different problems. Knowing which end is driving a length decision is the difference between a trim that fixes what's actually wrong and one that just happens to end up the right length.
